Just What, Exactly, is a Blepharoplasty?

blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove excess tissue from the upper and lower eyelids. Often referred to as an “eyelid lift”, this term is a misnomer because the eyelid is not lifted, but instead, excess skin & fat are removed from the upper and lower eyelids, creating a more natural, youthful look.

Excess skin in the upper eyelid can create a heavy looking eyelid, and a tired, more aged appearance. An upper blepharoplasty is performed to remove this excess skin which results in a younger, less tired appearance.

In many cases, the excess skin and fat can interfere with an individuals vision. In this case, removal of the excess skin opens the peripheral field of vision and improves overall visual function.  When the vision is being affected, the surgery becomes a medical necessity, and may be covered by insurance.

Lower blepharoplasty is performed to remove excess fat under the eye. This reduces puffiness and improves that “tired look.” This surgery involves an incision on the inside of the eyelid, so there is no skin incision, sutures, or residual scar.  After the fat is removed from the pocket in the lower lid, the skin seals to the underlying tissue, resulting in tightening and smoothing of the skin. This technique is perfect for patients who have lower lid puffiness and bags. This approach can be combined with our CO2 laser resurfacing around the eyes to reduce fine lines, wrinkles and creping.

Dr. O’Rourke’s philosophy is that cosmetic surgery should not look like “work has been done”, but rather, it should have a natural, pretty look.  It should look like you, only better.
