Acne and what to do about it

Acne is an infection of the skin resulting in redness, inflammation, blackheads, whiteheads and cysts. The infection occurs when oils, from the sebaceous glands, combine with dead skin cells which block the hair follicle. Once the pore is blocked, oil builds up enhancing bacterial growth.

The most common sites for an acne breakout include the face, neck, chest, back and upper arms, but can occur in other areas on the body. Breakouts can vary from mild, with very little response from the skin, to severe, which can be very painful. Although anyone can suffer from acne it is more often seen in people with hormonal changes (ie. puberty, pregnancy, menopause, hormone fluctuations), high stress, and poor diet or personal hygiene.

Here at Essence Laser & Wellness we offer several treatments for acne patients, including Chemical peels designed specifically for acne. Please read below for an explanation of our chemical peels and how they help with acne.

Chemical Peels from Skinceuticals and Vitality Institute (VI) have great results in the treatment of acne. The active ingredients, include Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid and Vitamin C.

Benzoyl Peroxide is used to treat mild to moderate acne. It works as a peeling agent which increases skin cell turnover and clears pores of debris, thus reducing the ability for bacteria to grow.

Salicylic Acid is a natural acid derived from willow tree bark. It speeds up exfoliation of the cells of the epidermis, opening clogged pores. Salicylic Acid aids in neutralizing bacteria and constricts the pore diameter. Because it has anti-inflammatory properties it is also known to reduce redness and inflammation.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that supports the immune system and can help to heal and repair damaged skin. It can improve the appearance of your skin and help prevent acne, wrinkles and improve the overall appearance of the skin. Vitamin C has also been linked with increased collagen production, which is beneficial in the reduction of acne and the healing of acne scars.
